Neko Atsume

Are you a cat lover? Have you ever wanted to play a game with cats as the protagonists? Or even wanted to be like the cat lady from The Simpsons and have like 50 of them? Well, my friends, that day has arrived.

Imported directly from Japan I present you Neko Atsume.

Now you’re probably thinking: “What in the world is a Neko Atsume?”

Well, the name literally means “Cat Collection”, and it’s available right now for iOS and Android platforms. Just go to the app store on your smartphone or tablet and download it right now for free! However, there is a big downside to it: you seriously should prepare yourself to be addicted to it. I’m not even kidding.

As I mentioned before, the game was originally released in Japan in October 2014 and was only available in its Japanese version. But after having been updated, the players have now the chance to switch between the Japanese and the English version of the game whenever they wish (or just, you know, stick with the English version if you don’t speak Japanese). Surprisingly, even before this English version was out, English speaking users were already playing the game.

The gameplay orbits around the player purchasing toys, furniture and food in order to attract a variety of cute little fur friends into their garden. The player can watch the kitties in the garden, take photos of them (which can be saved in albums so you can complete your cat collection) and receive gifts from them.

After leaving your garden the cute furry balls will leave behind gold or silver “niboshi” (にぼし,small dried sardines) and cute mementos once you have seen them a few times. I know it doesn’t sound like much of a big deal and may sound a bit boring, but trust me on this, once you see those kitties sneaking into your garden, you get that feeling you need to check your phone constantly for updates.

For now, there are 53 cats to collect. Among these, 19 are considered “rare cats” and only appear when certain items are placed in your yard. These especially good-looking cats have distinctive interactions with their respective items, but in order to catch them, you will need those items plus the right food to lure them. Each cat has a unique name, personality, and appearance (some of my favourite kitties are Peaches, Apricot, Saint Purrtrick and Frosty).

After you purchase the initial expansion of your garden, you will unlock more space to place more objects and have the opportunity to purchase a new decoration for it. Currently, the player has the option to remodel their garden to one of six different styles: Original, Zen, Rustic, Modern, Western or Sugary.

There is no end to the game yet, but cats only show up in your garden for as long as you continue to place food for them to eat.

The game is free to play, but there are additional niboshi available for purchase.
